Three boobs and Colin Farrel just can't keep a dark knight down. Called a "better looking, better acted version of Paul Verhoeven's original Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle, but, in the end, it is soulless and unmemorable," by critics, "Total Recall" earned $26 million, coming in behind "The Dark Knight Rises" weekend draw of $36 million, despite being out for 3 weeks now.
Counting weekend numbers, which bring the domestic total to a little over $354 million, and its overseas draw at almost $25 million more, to date, "The Dark Knight Rises" has earned a worldwide take at $733 million.
According to Rentrak, here are the rest of the weekend estimates:
1. The Dark Knight Rises $36.4 million
2. Total Recall $26 million
3. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days $14.7 million
4. Ice Age: Continental Drift $8.4 million
5. The Watch $6.4 million
6. Ted $5.5 million
7. Step Up Revolution $5.3 million
8. The Amazing Spider-Man $4.3 million
9. Brave $2.9 million
10. Magic Mike $1.4 million
On its opening weekend, "The Dark Knight Rises" was the second-biggest midnight debut ever, following the finale to the Harry Potter's franchise, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2."
Nolan's last Batman film, "The Dark Knight," earned $158.4 million during its opening weekend in 2008, making it the highest grossing opening ever for a 2D film. Both "Marvel's The Avengers" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" earned more, but were both available to see in 3D.
