Apple and Samsung Trial: Jury Selected for Patent Lawsuit Case

As the trail begins we will perhaps learn more than we ever did about the hand-held technology market.

Apple filed a lawsuit last year suing Samsung for intellectual property infringement of its iPad and iPhone. Samsung countersued it.

This is the biggest technology patent suit in the world. The jury for the blockbuster Apple-Samsung trial was selected on Monday. Seven men and three women were selected to hear the case.

The jurors were asked if they knew about the ongoing case, with many saying they read about it in the papers and others saying they read Steve Jobs's biography. About 70 people were questioned if they or their friends or family work for Apple, Samsung, Google, or Motorola.

The courtroom was packed to capacity.

"I see this as the first in what I expect to be many cases involving smartphone technology. It remains to be seen what the impact will be even if Apple wins," said R. Polk Wagner, professor of patent law at the University of Pennsylvania who told AFP that this is the biggest patent litigation case after the Polaroid and Kodak case in the 1980s. "Typically the patents are relatively easy to design around. So if Samsung loses a couple of rounds they may still be able to make their phones,"

Last week, the filings for Apple-Samsung trial revealed images of early iPhone prototype designs but on Saturday additional filings showed a better overview to the development of iPhone and iPad, revealing sketches, images from computer-aided sketches, and prototypes for both the iPhone and iPad. Many of the photographs were actual models of devices Apple produced as a part of its "design process."

The pictures showed an elongated iPhone, iPhone with hexagon-shaped sides. Other images show iPad with angled or rounded edges. The documents also revealed how Apple used focus groups and market research, which was denounced by Apple, "It isn't the consumer's job to know what they want," Jobs once said.

Apple is seeking is $2.5 billion in compensation. In the event of Samsung being found guilty, of patent infringement, there might be a ban on specific products in the U.S.
