iPhone 5 Rumors and Release Date - Rumors Get a Little More Credible, Wall Street Journal Reports New Phone to Feature Improved, Thinner Display

The rumors have been circulating around various blogs for months now concerning what the next iPhone will have and what it won't, despite little to no confirmations from Apple. Without the confirmation, it's difficult to draw conclusions, especially since not everything is what it seems for the next-gen gadget. But now the big fish are starting to bite on some of the circulating rumors.

Earlier today, The Wall Street Journal has issued an alert saying that Apple's next-generation iPhone comes equipped with a new screen technology. As they report, this new technology will make this new iPhone's display even thinner. This will likely yield a thinner device overall, something corroborated by the numerous part leaks thus far.

In the full article, the Journal reports that "Japanese liquid-crystal-display makers Sharp Corp. and Japan Display Inc.-a new company that combined three Japanese electronics makers' display units-as well as South Korea's LG Display Co. are currently mass producing panels for the next iPhone using so-called in-cell technology."

The technology integrates touch sensors into the LCD, making it unnecessary to have a separate touch-screen layer. The absence of the layer, usually about half a millimeter thick, not only makes the whole screen thinner, but the quality of displayed images would improve, said DisplaySearch analyst Hiroshi Hayase.The report notes that dropping the additional touch sensor layer will make gearing up the supply chain for production of the new device an apparently easier task.
