Gaming mogul Nintendo is reported to make a comeback in producing movies that are based from their popular array of games, like the 1993 film Super Mario Bros.
However, the 1993 flick was a major flop and did not do justice for the iconic video game.
The idea was brought out during the E3 conference by Nintendo representative Shigeru Miyamoto. Miyamoto's statement received a mixed reaction and though the idea will eventually die a natural cause, it's creating a stir in the industry.
Although there were movies that were based on a video game, none of them were successful in translating the gameplay or story line.
Silent Hill, for example, has terrified millions of its players for years, but the movie was a total disaster.
On the other side of the fence, movies like Wreck it Ralph, which is not based from a popular video game, was arguably the best video game film that has ever graced the silver screen.
However, this news does not seem to bother the Japan-based giant as they are really serious in reviving the idea. As a matter of fact, if someone were to read between the lines regarding Nintendo's position during the E3 conference, it is very evident that the organization is aggressive in their "outside the game business" ventures.
Another proof that Nintendo is dead serious in the pursuit was the rumor that a series of Legend of Zelda is in the pipeline at Netflix.
In related news, Nintendo has been very cordial when lending their characters to movies like Bowser in Wreck it Ralph and Donkey Kong in the upcoming Adam Sandler film Pixel, but the legendary Mario has been off limits since 1993.
Could this mean that they are prepping up the Italian plumber superhero for a big comeback in the next few months or years? We shall see.
