The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has received near-universal critical praise, and the sales numbers are matching that success.

Reuters reports that the sales of CD Projekt RED's latest entry are already nearing those of its predecessor, moving 1.5 million copies since it launch last week. The Witcher and The Witcher 2: Assassins Of Kings have sold 1 million and 1.7 million copies in their lifetimes, respectively.

How did the new title generate so much more interest than its predecessors, especially given that it's only available on current generation consoles and PC? The developers attribute it to cracking into the mainstream.

"Sales of the third part will be many times higher than with our earlier games. Preorders indicate this," CD Projekt's chief executive Adam Kicinski said in an interview. "We broke into the mainstream. It is such a moment in our firm's history that after some years people will look differently at CD Projekt before and after this release."

The team sees this as a turning point for the studio, and it's difficult to disagree. The series was already successful both critically and commercially, but this sales trajectory looks set to launch it into a new stratosphere. Reuters goes on to cite DM BO Brokerage analyst Tomasz Rodak, who said he can see the The Witcher 3's yearly sales reaching 7 million copies. That total could bring a record net profit of 369 million zlotys ($97.5 million) in 2015.
