Sony Takes To The Clouds with Gaikai Acquisition

Sony Entertainment acquired cloud gaming company Gaikai over thw weekend for a reported $380 million. Why would Sony spend that kind of cash? Mainly because Gaikai was rumored to be in the middle of working on a project to ease backwards compatability between Playstation 3 and Playstation 1 and 2 titles, along with their cloud-based software that could streamline the Playstation Network.

Andrew House, Sony Computer Entertainment president and group CEO said in a statement, "By combining Gaikai's resources including its technological strength and engineering talent with SXE's extensive game platform knowledge and experience, SCE will provide users with unparalleled cloud entertainment experiences."

Gaikai could be used to ease the transition among all Sony devices, including the Vita and Sony's on-going attempt to make a near-constant gameplay experience at home and on-the-go.

While there's nothing concrete for now, the idea that the cloud is going to become such an important tool in Next Generation consoles is all but becoming true. Which is sad when we think back to the PSPGo, which clearly emerged in the market too soon before sitting at the bottom of landfills with Guitar Hero controllers and Rock Band drum kits.
