Titled 'Awakening' the expansion is more than just the next chapter. Grinding Gear Games is revamping the entire system, from its deep Passive Skill tree to a complete rebalancing of the game from the very start. This isn't just an expansion, this is Path of Exile 2.0 and the company is hoping that change will be for the best.
Awakening will give players the first new maps to explore since launch as you delve further into the heart of darkness to stomp out the corruption that lays at the center of Wraeclast. New weapons and sets will guide you along, with 70 exquisitely sculpted new armaments (including a brand new set, titled Maraketh) and with new weapons come a wealth of new skill gems that will grant bonuses like warcries and summoning golems.

Oh and there will be monsters. Both new trash to sweep up, plus legendary creatures from the past who will stand in your way at every step along the path.
If all of this sounds good to you, then you can sign up for the open beta which begins next Monday, April 20. You can start playing Path of Exile today for free, too. The game does feature "ethical" micro-transactions, and can be enjoyed fully without the need to buy time.
