2K shut down the NBA 2K14 servers at the end of March, and with that has come unexpected consequences that will likely leave the fan base fuming.

Polygon reports that the shutting down the online servers has put an end to players' MyCareer and MyGM modes on PS4 and Xbox One, despite earlier claims from 2K that those would not be affected. Due to the need to authenticate these modes with an online sign in, switching off the servers has automatically retired everyone's player and management careers.
The March 31 server shutdown comes only 16 months after the game's launch--not a tremendously long run to begin with. 2K had told Polygon when the shutdown was announced that the career save files would be converted to offline versions, so that players could continue with them. This has not proven to be the case (you can start a new offline version from scratch now), and all players have to show for it is a fairly unapologetic response from 2K.
Xbox One April System Update Released
"This means that if you had created a MyCareer or a MyGM online save file that was once connected to our servers it too sadly has retired and is no longer available for use and it would be necessary to re-create these files as offline saves," 2K Support said in a support response to users.
"Sadly this may come as an inconvenience to some of you and if so we truly do understand and can feel for how upsetting this may seem as there always is a special bond that occurs between a player and their MyCareer save but all good things must come to an end and rest assured your MyCareer or MyGM went out while on top!"
This is very frustrating to fans, and pretty unfair behavior on 2K's part--especially when the shutdown comes only a little over a year since launch, and they claimed this wouldn't happen before the shutdown. This is the type of thing that can actively prevent fans from purchasing future titles from the publisher--let's hope the same system is not in place for NBA 2K15.
