The amiibo craze may have reached a peak yesterday, with pre-orders going on sale for the next wave of figures, including the retailer exclusives at Gamestop, Toys "R" Us, and Target.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3D Review Roundup: Is The New 3DS XL Port Worth Your Time?
Greninja is the exclusive amiibo at Toys "R" Us, and was in very high demand from the start. The figure was supposed to go on sale in the early morning on the east coast, but an unexpected launch left the majority of customers in the lurch. The figure went on sale in the middle of the night, and has since been sold out on their website.
Demand for these figures is insanely high, and anyone's chances of grabbing a Greninja amiibo are up in the air. It certainly won't be through pre-order barring a surprise stock refresh, so if you're really determined to get one, it will likely require braving a retail location on launch day. That implies the stores will have any more stock than what they put up for pre-order, though, and a lack of communication in this entire sales effort currently means that's a giant question mark. The physical launch is May 29, and Greninja is priced at $13.99, a dollar more than the usual cost.
Sunset Overdrive DLC 'Dawn Of The Rise Of The Fallen Machines' Out Now
The Pokemon character comes as part of a larger wave that includes Lucina, Robin, Charizard, Wario, and Pac-Man. Target has a Jigglypuff exclusive (which also sold out quickly online yesterday), and Gamestop has an (also sold out) Ness figure. Amiibo, aside from being neat-looking collectibles, are compatible with a variety of Nintendo games. On Wii U and the New 3DS, the figures can communicate with the hardware and save or transfer character data for use in certain games. Applicable software includes Super Smash Bros, Codename STEAM, Mario Party 10, Yoshi's Woolly World¸ and more.
