iPhone 5 Release Date and Rumors - Port Locks Out Unlicensed Accessories?

There have been rumors circulating that the next iPhone would utilize a smaller dock connector. TechCrunch has recently confirmed this information by way of three different manufacturers, who say that a 19-pin port will be used. The new port would effectively render any accessories that use the old 30-pin connector obsolete.

Apple's logic behind this action? Well, it comes down to what it always does; the mizzola, money, cash, 'dem GREENBACKS. The new port would limit third party device manufacturers from making accessories, leaving Apple in complete control. Why couldn't a third party just make adjustments and release products that utilize the new port, you ask? It's theorized that Apple plans on having a chip installed in both ends of the wire to ensure that the product has the official Apple seal of approval. Any products without the chip is S.O.L.

It will be kind of a pain that people won't be able to re-use any of their chargers once the new iPhone comes out (God only knows whenever that may be), but it's understandable why they're doing it. As one of the most popular phones on the market, it's obvious that other companies would try to ride the proverbial Apple wave, making their own accessories for the iPhone so they can capitalize on Apple's success.

According to The Fiscal Times, "In 2011 the global market for mobile phone accessories will rake in an estimated $34 billion in revenue. Apple-approved products-accessories made by Apple or branded by Apple-make up about $2 to $3 billion of that."

Apple's spent a fair amount of time going after third party accessory developers for patent infringement and creating what Apple sees as low quality accessories detrimental to their product(s). The move will allow Apple to keep itself out of the courtoom, chasing after various companies.

It's also thought that the smaller port will allow for Apple to make the next-gen phone thinner, and allow more room for an improved microphone, and better sound quality overall.
