Is The Xbox Surface Our New Microsoft Tablet?

What if the proposed iPad Killer wasn't what it looked like, at least as the Surface?

According to a few threads woven together over at The Verge, the Windows tablet from Microsoft that ties into their Smart Glass system and proposed Xbox 720 could be called the Xbox Surface.

According to them, "[s]pecifications for the alleged tablet include an ARM-based Texas Instruments processor with 288MB of RLDRAM 2 and a resolution of 1280 x 720." The takeaway though isn't that Surface would be a stand-alone tablet, but it'd be another controller much like what the Wii U is planning to do with theirs. Which makes sense when the Smart Glass demo at E3 showcased how the app could be used for a game like Madden to change a play, as well as keep up on who's where in Game of Thrones.

ZDNet claims everyone is overreacting, there is no tablet and they generally don't know what could be on the way. But their point that this won't be an iPad competitor is pretty much a given. So what if it isn't a stand-alone device, but a newer perphrial for our Xbox Media Centers with some more functionality built into it. Even scarier, what if the functionality shown at E3 was only related to Surface running Smart Glass, and others--including iOS and Android--would have less functionality until a later date?

We'll find out for sure starting at 3:30 pm PST, 6:30 EST when Microsoft unveils our new technological must-have.
