Harmonix is reportedly getting the band back together. The Rock Band 3, that is.
Indiecade East Interview: We Chat With The Makers Of Upcoming Chasm
The rumor comes by way of Bloomberg, who spoke with an anonymous source close to the project. Even better, according to the source, the new game will be coming to Xbox One and PS4 systems.
Rock Band 3 has been getting a little love the past few months, with two new songs having been released this past week. The support for additional content had been virtually DOA for the past several years, but new life seems to be breathing back into the once immensely popular party game.
Kids these days may not remember the high watermark of the band genre, but according to Bloomberg, Rock Band and Guitar Hero once made up 18% of the video game market, before it crashed it. It now represents about 1% of games sold, even lower than it was before the boom cycle.
What caused the crash is anybody's guess; according to the article, the trend in casual games (which is a silly moniker for Rock Band - have you seen how insane some of these people are?) headed to mobile, or perhaps it's because people stopped actually hanging out with friends to play video games. Do they even make single-screen or split-screen co-op anymore?
I think we all just ran out of room and couldn't keep rebuying new peripherals every year. Much like Assassin's Creed, we didn't need a brand new game EVERY SINGLE NOVEMBER. Just keep releasing songs, and we'll keep playing.
We all watched as the band kinda tore itself apart. But if there's one thing we love more than a group breaking up, it's watching it get back together. Rock Band, if you announce your next tour, all I have to say is: where can I buy tickets?
