In more Hunger Games news today, Mockingjay Part 2 is coming to IMAX!
Lionsgate Set To Debut The Hunger Games Exhibit This Summer
But not really. The fourth and final installment of the saga of Katniss Everdeen has already been shot and, unlike the recent Interstellar, was not shot native to the IMAX 70mm format. The film will instead be undergoing an extensive digital remaster to bring the film to the world's best cinema experience, and in 3D no less.
That's a whole lot of Katniss. While we always recommend seeing a film - any film really - in the largest possible format, we do caution with regards to various IMAX and 3D pictures. In order to best take advantage of the boundless beauty both formats bring, you have to shoot it that way from day one. Post-conversion is a quick workaround that is less driven by story necessity (Interstellar, for instance, absolutely must only ever be seen on an IMAX screen) and more about charging extra for seats.

Now, with Mockingjay - Part 2, it's a non-issue. We are all going to see it, and probably multiple times at that.
"I'm thrilled Mockingjay - Part 2 will be in IMAX theaters," said director Francis Lawrence. "Fans will now have the chance to see the film in any format they want, which is exciting; we recently saw the 3-D version of Mockingjay - Part 1 before its release in China, and the new level of immersion was really fantastic." Mockingjay - Part 2 will mark the first domestic 3D release of a Hunger Games movie.
Given the sheer overpowering hugeness of the IMAX format, it's a good thing Lawrence toned down the incredibly frustrating shaky cam of the first two films. Take that queasiness, then add in an overwhelming, curved screen and then add 3D rendering to that. Sick city.
Mockingjay - Part 2 is out on November 20. Before purchasing tickets for the IMAX show, make sure it's a real IMAX screen and not that godawful LIEMAX stuff they try to peddle on you.
