Flappy Bird Arcade Cabinet Announced, Gives New Life To Mobile Sensation

Mobile phenomenon Flappy Bird has already made its return to smartphones following its removal from app stores, but the simple score-chaser isn't stopping there.\

Enter a Flappy Bird arcade cabinet, courtesy of Bay Tek Games. The company has seemingly gotten a license to transform the game into a large arcade version, as reported by DualShockers.

The game itself will match the original iOS and Android versions, but will take place on a 42-inch monitor. Players collect tickets instead of coins as they flap their way between the pipe obstacles. The game will be operated with one large button, and offer daily and all-time high score boards.

As much flak as Flappy Bird attracted, this seems an excellent idea. The game worked well as a simple mobile app, and while this will no doubt garner criticism, an arcade version makes a lot of sense. The high score format has been used in arcades forever, and the simple gameplay makes it easy for anyone to try a few games. I can already see the crowds gathering around a player as he or she embarks on a death-defying run, building the tension and excitement until the inevitable crash. Who doesn't want to see that?

Creator Dong Nguyen pulled the app off mobile stores at the height of its popularity, citing concerns about players becoming addicted. He released the game again after the fervor died down, and I'm glad it can come back in both formats.
