The upcoming Mortal Kombat X got a nice spread in the Finnish magazine ‘Pelaaja’ (‘Player’). An intrepid reader over at TestYourMight has translated some key moments for the rest of us and it illuminates some fun new details on everyone’s favorite razor-hatted warrior, Kung Lao.

Mortal Kombat X takes place some 25 years after the events of Mortal Kombat (the ninth entry into the official series and a retelling of the first three titles). As such, the pacifist monk has aged significantly, now boasting a head of white hair and that look of ‘I’m too old for this!’ that befalls all aged warriors. Lao, like the other mainstays in the series, comes with three different variations - and not just different costumes.
“The differences between Kung Lao's Tempest-, Buzz Saw- and Hat Trick -variations happen to be the biggest ones yet.” begins Raider, who translated the interview, “With Tempest Kung Lao uses more spinning attacks and has the ability to set his hat to spin around him as a shield of sorts. In his Buzz Saw variation his hat is sharpened with razor blade edges and allows the player to control his hat throws more. Hat Trick is the most experimental of the three, because you can throw and call back your hat at any point you want. This keeps the opponent on their toes, because the hat can extend combos.”

The translation also goes into some of the game’s “complex online features”, including the five different factions you can choose that will influence how the game’s menus “look in both single and multi-player.”
It seems unlikely that ‘old Kung Lao’ is the character teased by creator Ed Boon that will appear this month in GamesMaster magazine. The roster will stand at 24 characters, but each will have three separate variants, making a total of 72 different playstyles for the ultra-violent fighting game.
Mortal Kombat X will hit PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC on April 14.
