Carl (Chandler Riggs) is almost a forgotten character in The Walking Dead. New rumors indicate that he may have a stronger role in the upcoming half season than what we've seen of him thus far.
Maggie May Go Through Some Epic Changes In Second Half Of The Walking Dead
Carl has had a few moments that have been very stand out among the cast. But aside from his fame as a meme ("Mom's dead, Dad"), he's mostly known for being pretty unlikable. That's probably not fair, he's been through a lot and he's at that age that kids are generally unlikable.
Still, he hasn't seen much in the way of major plot importance since Season 3 and has mostly been pushed to the background in favor of the drama and action with the adults. This may change with the next half season.
Everything We Know About Cobalt, The Walking Dead Spinoff So Far
Undead Walking pointed out that Carl has been with the group since the beginning and as we are rotating characters and focuses around, he may see a more important role in the show.
This makes since, he's getting older and slowly transitioning out of the idea of a child that needs to be protected and more into someone who can help the group in more ways. He's already shown himself to be capable as well as cool under intense amounts of pressure.
Giving him a better role in the show could take the storyline in a whole new direction. Most of the action with Carl in the comic happens as a sort of morality foil for Rick. In a sense, Carl gives Rick a reason to remain "human" even as he starts to become more and more reckless.
With all the changes that the show took, it will be interesting to see if this dynamic can still play out.
