Tekken 7 producer Katsuhiro Harada has announced an all new character for the fighting game. More than cat lady last year, this one is bound to cause controversy.

Meet Shaheen, a warrior from Saudi Arabia. The tall, handsome figure would look right at home in Assassin’s Creed game (have they made one in a non-Western city yet?). Shaheen comes dressed in somewhat loose Middle Eastern garb (he has a keffiyeh, but not a thawb because the latter is probably not the best for fighting) as well as a sword by his side.
Last August, Bandai Namco reached out to the Middle Eastern community for their support and criticism when they debuted the draft of the then-unnamed Shaheen.

"If the Tekken fan community, especially those in the Middle Eastern area, end up liking this character, I would like to feature this character in the game," Harada said in a Facebook post. "On the other hand, if this character is not received well by the Middle Eastern Tekken fan community members, there is a possibility that the character will be considerably changed or letting go of the idea of featuring this character in the game.”
The post itself netted numerous replies, most of which were very positive towards a Middle Eastern character, but critical of the Assassin’s Creed-esque style behind it. Clearly, the support was prevalent enough that Harada and Bandai Namco decided to move along with the design.
We hope to see a video of Shaheen in action soon.
