The PSN and Xbox Live outage on Christmas Day may have put a sour note on the holidays for many looking to play their new games or consoles online, but Sony is doing its best to make reparations.

PSN was down for a fair amount longer than Xbox Live, with issues extending well into the weekend. Sony is offering a gift for fans to make up for it in the form of five extra days of PlayStation Plus and a PSN store discount.
The PS Plus extension applies to anyone who had a membership or free trial during the outage period, according to the announcement. It will be automatically applied, so "no action is necessary" to make use of it when it becomes available. More details on the PlayStation Blog will fill us in on when exactly that will be.

As for the discount, it will be a one-time use 10 percent price reduction on a total cart order via the PlayStation Store. This one will apply to everyone who uses PSN, not just PS Plus members, which is a nice gesture given that all online activity was limited, even for non-paying customers. When PSN security was breached in the past and the service down for much longer than this occurrence, Sony gave away free titles to make up for the situation. Given the (relatively) much shorter nature of these issues, it wasn't guaranteed the company would give away anything to fans--kudos to them for having done so.
