Ads for Mortal Kombat X like to ask us "Who's Next?" Apparently the next answer to that question is coming in about two weeks. The newest character reveal for Mortal Kombat X will take place in the January copy of GamesMaster magazine, set to release in early January.
It's been a while since we last saw a character announcement for the next installment of NetherRealm's historically gory fighting franchise. Almost three months ago, sorcerer Quan Chi was confirmed for an appearance in the Mortal Kombat X lineup, but we have heard almost nothing since then. Rumors have been flying around, throwing around names like Liu Kang, Ermac and Kenshi, but NetherRealm has been keeping most of its 24-character roster under tight wraps.
Even Ed Boon's Twitter, usually a good source of Mortal Kombat news has been silent for a couple of months in terms of new characters, though he did helpfully confirm when we would see the next announcement.
The advertised cover for GamesMaster also shows that the magazine's reveal will include new information about Mortal Kombat X's online play.
In Mortal Kombat X, players will have access to the same kind of exaggerated carnage that originally put the series in the spotlight, but a few changes have been thrown in. Though the roster looks to be confirmed for a 24-character cap (barring any DLC), each fighter will come with three variants that offer unique gameplay styles. For example, instead of Sub-Zero being his usual, slower but bulkier self in the ring, he'll come with three different loadouts. One could make him speedier by sacrificing a bit of defense. One could slow him down and make him even more of a tank. But all change up how he performs in a fight.
These variants also come with different abilities, like Scorpion's one variant that allows him to summon hell-bats to lend him some tactical support. In the end, it just means that the game's 24 characters will be able to behave more like 72 characters, giving the game plenty of added depth.
Mortal Kombat X will hit PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC on April 14.
