Developers Naughty Boy has revealed a preview of the game The Last of Us titled "The Sky has turned Grey" in the Sony PlayStation blog.
"We are excited to share a very fresh, very provocative video that should answer some of your questions about what went down inside those city walls. You'll get an idea of what it takes to be a survivor in Joel and Ellie's heartless new world," as posted by Eric Monacelli, Community Strategist of Naughty Dog.
The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic third-person survival action-adventure video game. The main characters are Joel, a "ruthless" survivor, and Ellie who is a 14 year-old girl, wise beyond her age however has no memory of the world pre-apocalypse.
Screenshots and gameplay from Naughty Dog reveal new changes to the characters such as Ellie. Her new younger look has resulted in criticism from fans, who preferred to see a mature Ellie for the game. The Last of Us may present a youthful Ellie due to tie-ins with the game's storyline.
Don't let Ellie's youthful appearance deceive you as the mature and wise minded 14 year-old is a true survivor as seen in the trailer. In the one and a half minute video, we see Joel and Ellie continue their journey in a battered pickup truck where they encounter a group of hunters through ruins of the United States. The duo will come across other survivors whom they will have to face in order to survive. The trailer shows the truck being ambushed by other survivors as the two protagonists brutally kill their attackers one by one.
"We want these characters to feel real," said Naughty Dog's Creative Director Neil Druckman. "These people are trying to survive just as Joel and Ellie are. They work together and behave differently, based on the circumstances."
"The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven tale about a modern plague decimating mankind. Nature encroaches upon civilization, forcing remaining survivors to kill for food, weapons and whatever they can find. Joel, a ruthless survivor, and Ellie, a brave young teenage girl who is wise beyond her years, must work together to survive their journey across what remains of the United States," said Evan Wells, Co-President of Naughty Dog as posted on the PlayStation Blog.
The game will take off in the post-apocalyptic of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and slowly move out of the city into other unannounced areas. For the characters, survival will mean killing and scavenging.
"I've been really impressed by the trailers for this game thus far. They're short but effective. You really get a sense of what Ellie and Joel's day-to-day life must be like in this post-apocalyptic environment," writes CinemaBlend.
Overall the visual display is looking very impressive as the two characters embark into a new world of survival gameplay. The Last of Us is expected to be released early next year and we hope that more information about the game will be revealed during the E3 expo.
