Sony Pictures Pirate Attack: Confidential Emails Reveal Spider-Man Not Joining Avengers Civil War, Forging Ahead On His Own Slate

Emails Between Sony and Marvel Hint at Spider-Man’s Future

More bad news for Sony after they were hacked by pirates last month. After films were snatched and passwords revealed (from a clever folder labeled "passwords"), now their confidential emails have been released. This turns out to be good news for fans though, as they reveal possible deals in the works for the Spider-Man franchise according to the Wall Street Journal.

Sony Pictures Targeted in Pirate Attack, Feature Films Leaked Early

Sony has had rights to Spider-Man for a long time and will continue to hold them for a while yet. This is despite fans begging Marvel to take control back but business is business. In an email dated October 30, Sony Pictures president Doug Belgrad touches on an idea for a new trilogy where Sony would retain "Creative Control, marketing and distribution," to Amy Pascal, Sony's motion picture chief.

There's no given response to that email chain but there was a separate email that indicated that Marvel wanted to the web slinger in the third Captain America movie, Civil War. Which would be epic, however, it seems that this will not be the case as the two companies did not continue the thread.

New Avengers Website and Behind the Scenes Sneak Peek

The studio is still planning to go ahead with its Spider-Man plans. These include a new animated Spider-Man as well as two spinoffs, one which would focus on the Sinister Six, the other would be about the women in Spider-Man's life. I'm hoping it's more superwomen, less Aunt May and Mary Jane trading baking recipes and wondering where Peter is all the time.

Discussions regarding the new directions for Spider-Man will take place at the "Spidey Summit" in January.
