Apple Wins Control of "iphone5.com" Domain

After filing a claim on the domain with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Apple now has full control over the domain. The WIPO is a United Nations organization that mediates cybersquatting cases, and according to WIPO records, Apples' original complaint had been "terminated," which often signifies a closed case.

This is not the first time that Apple has made claims with the WIPO over what Apple believed to be trademark infringement. Apple filed a claim last November to acquire 8 other websites with "iphone" in their names. Apple is also involved in trademark infringement claims against the sites itunes.net, applemusic.com, and applestor.com.

Originally the home of discussion forum dedicated to smartphones, iphone5.com was originally registered anonymously by an Australian URL in 2008. No statement has been made by Apple if they will officially refer to its new phone as simply iPhone5. At the moment, iphone5.com remains blank, and it remains to be seen if Apple will add content to the site, or simply use it as a re-direct.

The next iPhone is not expected to launch until the fall.
