Kingdoms of Amalur in Big Debt, Can Multiplayer Save 38 Studios?

Developers of the role playing game Kingdoms of Amalur, 38 Studios seems to be undergoing financial troubles. This was revealed when state officials of Rhode Island informed NBC 10 about the $75 million investment that 38 Studios made with the government.

"We're always working to keep Rhode Island companies solvent, and that's what we're doing with 38 Studios," said Governor Lincoln Chafee.

38 Studios had missed a $1.125 million installment from the state and is meeting up with the state officials to resolve the issue.

"Speaker of the Rhode Island state House, Gordon D. Fox, announced that 38 Studios had missed a $1.125 million installment on its roughly $75 million loan from the state. The developer is now seeking an emergency meeting with the state agency that issued the loan, the Economic Development Corporation, which is chaired by the governor," reports Kotaku.

Rhode Island state officials had granted $75-million with the hope that 38 studios would assist in creating job opportunities and bring in millions of dollars of tax revenue to the state. However, at this stage, the plan seems to be going on a bleak.

The developers 38 studios had pumped out huge amount of money while creating the Amalur universe.  Developers have been creating more Downloadable contents (DLC) and Amalur-based massively multiplayer online (MMO) dubbed Project Copernicus which is yet to be officially launched.

Spawn creator Todd McFarlane and fantasy author R.A. Salvatore has also been included for the project and they are regularly bringing new additions to the game. In 2009, developers introduced Big Huge Games with single-player RPG, and also reworked the game into Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

Kingdoms of Amalur had sold over 330,000 copies in its initial month, however, the company seems to be suffering the financial constraints and whether the company overcomes this loss can be decided when the developers launches its massively multiplayer online  mode.
