Whedon, Favreau Talks Villains for Iron Man 3 and Avengers 2

With The Avengers hitting the $1 billion mark worldwide, Jon Favreau, the Director of Iron Man and The Avengers director Joss Whedon revealed tid bits of information about the next Iron Man 3 and Avengers sequel.

Though the plot of the story has not been revealed yet, according to rumors, Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, will head to China to face his toughest opponent, Mandarin. There are possibilities of Sir Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce possibly being casted as villains. Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, and Scarlett Johansson have been confirmed for Iron Man 3.

"After Avengers, you want to start with something really bold and inspired, and if you've ever seen Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, you've seen that when Downey and Shane get together, interesting and unexpected things happen," said Jon Favreau, Producer of Iron Man 3. "I'm happy to see that it's taking a bit of a tonal shift from The Avengers and it's going to be something completely different and exciting, and I'm happy to be a part of it."

Iron Man and Iron Man 2 was directed by Jon Favreau, however, Iron Man 3 will see a new director in Shane Black and Favreau will be producing the movie. During the interview, Favreau has also discussed about his involvement with Iron Man 3.

"I'll be very involved on that one. I've already been talking to them and I feel a tremendous connection to that franchise and that character, and I'm very proud to see it moving forward in a way that re-enforces that story," added Favreau.

Also in an interview with Slash magazine, The Avengers' director Joss Whedon spoke on his decision for the sequel's main villain.

"He for me is the most powerful and fascinating Marvel villain. He's the great grand daddy of the badasses and he's in love with death and I just think that's so cute...somebody had to be in control and had to be behind Loki's work and I was like 'It's got to be Thanos,'" said Whedon.

With an appearance in Thor, Thanos was seen in Odin's throne room with the infinite gauntlet.  A power hungry Eternal born on Saturn's moon Titan, Thanos is obsessed with death. He is immortal and is equipped with extraordinary strength and intellect. In his war against Earth, he was defeated on many occasions by the Avengers. In the comics, Thanos has come across other marvel superheroes, including Spiderman and Silver Surfer.

But how does Thanos get the gauntlet out of Odin's trophy room, and what does Whedon have planned for the villain? We'll have to wait until the Avengers sequel hits in 2015 to find out.

Iron Man 3 will go into production sometime in May and is due to be released on May 3, 2012. The movie will be the sequel to Iron Man 2 and the seventh installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
