Original Wolfenstein 3D Free to Play! Marks 20th Anniversary

In honor of the 20th anniversary of the release of "Wolfenstein 3D," Bethesda recently announced that players can now play the game for free in all its original glory. Anyone with Google Chrome 16, Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 11, or Apple Safari 5 can take blast away at the third Reich.

Tasked with escaping from Castle Wolfenstein, players take command of B.J. Blazkowicz, an American spy during World War II, and ultimately take down the führer himself. Players would see Blazkowicz return to defeat the Nazis again in 2001's "Return to Castle Wolfenstein," and its sequel "Wolfenstein" in 2009.

Originally released in 1992, publisher id would later go on to create the notorious Doom franchise the following year. While acquired by Bethesda in 2009, the former company is still pumping out games under the Bethesda umbrella, announcing the development of Doom 4 in 2008.

Wolfenstein 3D is considered the granddaddy of FPS games. Ported to everything from the Super Nintendo to the iPhone, it popularized the genre and paving the way for shooters like "Call of Duty" today. Before "Mortal Kombat" and "Grand Theft Auto," "Wolfenstein 3D" was controversial in its own right for its use of Nazi symbolism and violent gameplay. Ports were often heavily edited, or even altered.

In addition to giving players free access to the game, Bethesda is also allowing iOS users to download Wolfenstein 3D Classic Platinum edition on iTunes. For free.
