Gordon-Levitt is not new to directing, his first film as director was the 2013 Don Jon, which he also wrote and stared in, so he has at least proven he can pull double duty.
But the world of Sandman is a massive many nuanced universe with a dedicated fan base. No easy task to take on for a new director. But Gordon-Levitt seems to be on the right path as revealed during a Reddit AMA. The actor shared part of his relationship with the original writer for the epic comic series, "Neil has been extremely big hearted with me, and he's the one I want to please most."

This is good news for fans of the source material as it shows that the original creator is somewhat involved with production which is always good for the final product. Although there's no news on when this project will actually start filming, David Goyer has confirmed in a separate interview that a draft of the script has been sent to Warner Bros and that they are pleased with it so the project will be moving forward.
