Super Smash Bros on 3DS has been an instant commercial success for Nintendo, becoming the 10th 3DS title to sell at least 1 million units in the U.S.
Top Five Wii U-Exclusive Super Smash Bros Additions And Features
Nintendo announced that more than 485,000 copies were sold in October, bringing its total to 1.2 million in the U.S. alone. The Super Smash Bros has become the best-selling handheld game so far in 2014, which may change (as Nintendo points out) with the looming release of Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
The launch of the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros is still ahead later this month-it will be interesting to see if many players buy both editions. The Wii U version offers some upgraded and additional features (plus the full controller and large display), but the 3DS title is a fully-featured game in its own right. Owning two copies of the game will unlock Mewtwo as a playable character, surely a calculated bonus by Nintendo.
The other million-plus selling 3DS titles are as follows: Mario Kart 7 (3.62m), Super Mario 3D Land (3.34m), New Super Mario Bros. 2 (2.33m), Pokemon X (2.11m), Pokemon Y (2.03m), The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (1.41m), Luigi's MansionL Dark Moon (1.36m), Animal Crossing: New Leaf (1.42m) and now Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS (1.20m).
Wii U hardware and software sales have also increase through the first 10 months of 2014. Compared to the same periods in 2013, hardware and software sales are up 47 percent and 84 percent respectively.
