The SmartWatch 3 is Sony's introduction into the Android Wear ecosystem, and it's now available on Google Play. Though the wearable has been visible in the digital store for some time, it's now displaying that the watch is actually in stock and that customers can now pick up their own for $249.99.
The LG G Watch R Is Now Up For Sale On Google Play, With An Ambitious Price Tag
The SmartWatch 3 is the first wearable in the Android Wear family that will be able to make full use of the newest software update Google rolled out that allows smartwatches to enjoy more functionality when separated from a smartphone. For many smartwatches, their usefulness was limited when they weren't in contact with a nearby phone, which could be frustrating for people who like to leave their phone at home while they go out and exercise.
The new update allows Android Wear watches to play music even when not connected to a phone, which all Wear devices should now be able to do. But the update also allowed watches with built-in GPS to track statistics like routes, pace and distance run while separated from a phone. The SmartWatch 3 is the first Wear device to come with this built-in GPS, which means customers who get Sony's wearable will be able to track their exercise routines without needing to bring their phone along for the ride.
The LG G3 Might Be The First Smartphone To Get The Android 5.0 Lollipop Update
The SmartWatch 3 also comes with an IP68 water and dust resistance rating. Though, in all likelihood, this is mostly for people who want to run either in dusty conditions or in heavy rain without worrying about their smartwatch's well-being, the rating also means that the watch can go for a swim in 1.5 meters of water for up to a half hour. You can even take it into a chlorinated pool, though Sony advises that you rinse it off afterwards.
The SmartWatch 3 is now available from Google Play for $249.99. As of now, orders go out for shipping one or two days after ordering.
