Minecraft's growth of $80 million earnings and 25 million downloads may just be the beginning of a big year for the Swedish development company, Mojang.
The game has already sold 5 million copies and garnered an additional $1 million in merchandising. Minecraft also plans to have an Xbox 360 version available in the Live Arcade section staring May 9th.
Micorosft announced that the Xbox edition integrates a tutorial mode along with a new crafting system, split screen, and possibly Kinect controller support with voice control. Gamers can purchase a copy with 1600 Microsoft points or $20.
Naturally with any successful and popular title, talks of making a movie enters the conversation. Mojang has already been approached by film producers about possibilities of launching a Minecraft movie or TV show.
"We've been approached by a number of high-profile Hollywood producers and asked to do TV shows," said Mojang's chief executive, Carl Manneh. "We may do that. It's hard when you don't have any experience and someone comes to throw these ideas around. We have so much to focus on with just the game development and growing the business. But if the right idea comes along and the right people that we'd want to work with, we'd say, why not?"
If things fall into place, Minecraft can expect huge success and potential to launch sequels as well as versions across multiple consoles.
