There was bound to be a day when Stan Lee's insistence of getting a small cameo in every Marvel movie would begin to produce some negative side effects. The Generalissimo has had to cancel plans to visit New York Comic Con this year due to a filming conflict, NYCC announced over social media.
The Content Has Expanded, But Actual Comic Books Still Have A Place At New York Comic Con's
The part-time Hugh Hefner impersonator is credited as the co-creator of some of today's most profitable Marvel characters like Spider-Man, the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and the X-Men. The characters he created have driven the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not to mention the film franchises of several other studios. And it seems that it's one of these very films that's causing him to miss NYCC 2014.
Stan Lee giveth, and Stan Lee taketh away.
Are Ya Ready Kids? Tom Kenny Is Coming To NYCC 2014
The 91-year-old is a New York City native with a storied comic book career that started a whole 75 years ago. It's probably not his first choice to miss out on NYCC, but some sacrifices have to be made if you want to keep up a cameo track record like his.
Even if NYCC con-goers won't have the chance to catch a glimpse of The Man himself across a crowded room, there will still be plenty of comics industry players out on the floor. You'll just have to see Stan Lee the old fashioned way: Watch any Marvel movie and wait for his not at all subtle 15-second appearance.
Make sure to keep up with our NYCC 2014 coverage as we count down the days until next week's big opening.
