Google ARG Ingress Update Introduces New Mission Feature, App Reaches 7 Million Installs

Google ARG Ingress Introduces Objective-Based Mission Mode

Niantic Labs, the developer behind Google's augmented reality game Ingress, announced today that they will be introducing a new Missions feature in their hit mobile game as the app reaches its 7 millionth mobile install.

The news comes out of a post on the game's Google Plus blog, and the details have been included in this week's Ingress Report, which you can watch below. In what Niantic calls "the biggest and most significant change since our launch," the general idea is to offer players objective-based missions that require more than just finding a portal and interacting with it.

Missions will have players follow a trail to several real-world points of interest. Each mission is different in how it approaches this concept. Some missions are non-linear, allowing players to check in to the locations in whatever order they please. Others hide all but the starting point, forcing players to solve puzzles to figure out where they need to head next. Completing a mission will give players a snappy little badge to go on their profile.

Though the current lineup of missions was made by Niantic themselves, they are planning to allow players to create their own missions for fellow Ingress Agents to solve. Right now the mission creating privileges are restricted to a small collection of long-time players, but the developer has plans to extend the ability to all players over a certain level.

The new update for Ingress is live now for Android users and will be coming to iOS "in the very near future."
