Everyone who plays Minecraft on a Sony system can now upgrade to the next generation without losing their progress.
Oh Have You Not Heard? Microsoft Owns Mojang Now
4J Studios, the developer behind the Minecraft console ports, announced over Twitter today that the update that will enable users to upload world saves from the PlayStation 3 edition will be rolling out today. Transferring saves between console generations was advertised as a function of the next-gen upgrade for Minecraft, but it has been missing from the PS3 edition since the PlayStation 4 version released two weeks ago.
If the process works anything like the Xbox One version (and considering it's all from the same studio, that seems likely), the option to upload a save should appear on the PS3 file select screen. Users may have to upload saves one at a time, though, much like Xbox owners needed to do. That means making sure each save is fully downloaded onto the PS4 before uploading a new one from the PS3.
Xbox Already Released A Video Detailing How To Transfer Minecraft Saves On Their Systems
Depending on how large your PS3 save files are, this process might take a while, especially if you've got a lot of Game of Thrones castle reconstructions to ship over. With that in mind, it might be best to prioritize which saves you absolutely need to bring to the next generation and which you're comfortable with leaving behind.
Of course, there doesn't seem to be an official limit on how many saves you can port over. The only limitation is how much free time you have to sit in front of your consoles, alternating between your PS3 and PS4 one save at a time.
As always, 4J also noted that the PS Vita version of Minecraft is still on the way. The port is currently still in debugging, but seeing as how they brought in YouTubers for playable demos earlier this month, it can't be too far from completion.
