Support for Spotify streaming was added to Amazon Fire TV consoles today, according to an announcement on Spotify's website.
Spotify's Windows Phone App Has Now Caught Up To iOS And Android
The new Amazon Fire TV functionality uses Spotify Connect to allow users to transfer their streaming music from their smartphones or tablets to an Amazon Fire TV box easily. After that, the mobile device can start running other apps or even leave Wi-Fi range, and the TV will still be streaming music from Spotify.
According to the announcement, Spotify Connect also allows users to use their phone or tablet as a remote control for the music streaming, meaning that media junkies will have one less device to worry about.
Flappy Bird Returns, But Only For Amazon Fire TVs
Spotify notes that for all of these Spotify Connect functions, users will need to get a subscription for a Spotify Premium account. For users who have until this point held off on giving Spotify any money, a new subscription will run users $9.99 a month (half that if you're a student), though you can get a free trial for 30 days to see how you like it. A Premium subscription also comes with offline listening, HD audio and an ad-free experience.
Adding functionality to Amazon Fire TV lets Spotify users enjoy the full experience of the service no matter what device they carry, and Spotify has slowly but surely taken steps to ensure that this experience can be enjoyed by almost anyone. Earlier this summer, Spotify updated its Windows Phone app to contain the same functions as its brothers on iOS and Android.
