Now, as a bit of a tabletop mark, I'm excited for this very different-looking D&D game. The character designs are wonderfully cartoony as you can see in the header image for this article, which is usually not an approach Wizards takes (unless in collaboration with the guys from Penny Arcade - so I suppose it's somewhat fitting that this announcement happens at PAX Prime). The promised real-time combat is also a very different beast than the turn-based traditional combat of the tabletop.
ArcheAge Release Date Finally Announced!
Perhaps the biggest difference between classic D&D and any videogame adaptation of it is the very simple fact that in a tabletop, the sky - or at least, the players' imagination - is the limit. A pre-programmed game has a very strictly defined world and only a set number of ways to interact with it. PAX reports indicate that players will in fact have some say over the game world.
