Microsoft appears to be testing a program to give console owners certain games free access to games for one day.

As Eurogamer reports, a post on Reddit showed a picture of Max: The Curse of Brotherhood on the Xbox Live Marketplace with the description "Free Play Day With Gold". This is not something we've seen before in the Xbox ecosystem, and seems to be a new program Microsoft is experimenting with.
The game is listed in the "Games With Gold" section--you'll need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to access these games for free. A couple of games are chosen for free each month for subscribers (a new feature on Xbox, similar to PSN's free monthly PS Plus titles), and today they have been supplemented with a free day of Max: The Curse of Brotherhood.

Microsoft didn't make much noise about this feature. In fact, as Eurogamer points out, the official Xbox Twitter support account did not seem to know what the feature was when asked by a customer. After having it explained and investigating the feature, the account stated that an official announcement would be coming soon.
Valve often runs similar offers on Steam, allowing players free access to a game for a weekend. The same title will often be on sale during this time, so those drawn in and enjoying the free weekend are tempted to buy the full game at a discounted price. As of now, there is still no announcement from Microsoft on this "Free Play Day With Gold" feature.
