Sony: The Last Guardian Not Cancelled, No Release Date Yet

Fans of The Last Guardian may breathe a sigh of relief as Sony Worldwide Studios announced that the game has not been cancelled.  The studio has previously developed Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, which received positive reviews.  Their latest work on The Last Guardian has thus far taken a considerable amount of time and not announcing any release date has kept gamers on edge.

An incident last year involved GameStop sending emails to customers notifying that the game has been cancelled and removing it from the preorder reservations listing.  According to an interview with 1Up and Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida, the latest update on progress has been slow but ongoing.  Yoshida assured that the mastermind behind the game, Fumito Ueda, is still on the project despite the game's lead designer and executive producer is said to be departing from Sony.

"[Ueda] comes in [to the office] every day, and he's probably one of the people who works the longest hours. The project has been making progress, but slow progress. So that's tough, but we haven't changed any focus. It's still a really important project and a vision we want to see realized, and Fumito's vision is really causing a very difficult challenge for the developers, so there's some scrapping and rebuilding - iteration in the process. That's why [it's taking so long]," said Yoshida.

The game was delayed last year and may not see a release date in 2012 due to current circumstances.  Despite delays, many gamers may delight in the fact that The Last Guardian will see the light of day.  Yoshida commented that the game is in a playable state but is not yet ready to come out.
