Comic-Con goers were treated to a quick and unexpected look at the upcoming Warcraft film, directed by Duncan Jones.
Marvel's SDCC 2014 Wrap Up: Guardians All Up In Here
The video game adaptation will hit theaters on March 11, 2016. Principal photography wrapped a little while ago and so the crew is well into post-production and viz fx by this point. The film, which will simply be titled Warcraft (a good, clean title which would allow for several sequels). A short teaser debuted at the Legendary panel and while GameNGuide was not present this year, the fine folks at SlashFilm had a succinct and enticing write-up about what was seen:
"We start with a room full of Alliance weapons. Swords, shields and more. 'I've spent more time protecting my king than my own son,' a character says in voiceover. Lots of men in Armor and some banners. 'Does that make me loyal or a fool?' These are the Alliance humans. We cut to a green sky. Now we see the Horde orcs. They looked like if Shrek was real, but much scarier and realistic. Lord of the Rings quality. 'I've lead thousands of warriors into battle. Does that make me a leader or a coward' The trailer then cuts between scenes of men preparing for battle, the orcs preparing for battle, and the two main voices echoing their similar philosophies. The orc home is an epic mountain space. Then the question, 'Is war the only answer?' And then it begins. Battles. Flying. Swords. Hammers. An alliance griffin diving down into a battle. A man jumps on the back of the orc and stabs him in the chest."
The Last Of Us Will Be An Actual Film Produced By Sam Raimi
A few things to take away: Lord of the Rings quality. Not Hobbit quality, the original and still the best. Jones is combining physical elements with CGI enhancements to create a tactile, very real world.
At the panel, Jones said it was like making the Lord of the Rings and Avatar at the same time.
It appears that Jones will be seeking a 'War. War never changes.' theme, with both sides correct and wrong in their beliefs and actions. The film will act as a prequel to the events of World of Warcraft and follows the last guardian of Azeroth, Medivh, as he attempts to stop but ultimately orchestrates the sundering of the Orcish homeworld Draenor and the eventual invasion of Azeroth.
Hopefully Blizzard will release the teaser onto the net within the next couple of days. The description alone gives me goosebumps.
Warcraft stars Ben Foster, Travis Fimmel (Vikings), Clancy Brown and Dominic Cooper. It may be the first great video game movie.
