Legendary film director and producer Sam Raimi made a surprise appearance at Comic Con yesterday and not only did he drop mention of an Evil Dead television series, he also confirmed that yes, The Last of Us will be coming to a movie theater near you.
New Shadow Of Mordor Trailer Is Better Than The Movies
The film was rumored as early as March, but this is the first time it has been confirmed. Raimi and Neil Druckmann, who penned the script to the award winning title, went on stage during the Screen Gems panel and broke the good news to riotous applause.
Raimi will act as producer and presumably distribute the film via his Ghost House label. Druckmann will write the script. No talk of a potential director was discussed, though the duo did mention that they were in talks with Maisie Williams, better known as Arya Stark on HBO's Game of Thrones who is about the right age to play Ellie and is just fantastic.
Robert Kirkman's New Comic About Demons Coming To Cinemax
Now, obviously the folks at Naughty Dog, who created the game, had Ellen Page in mind for the role. The only thing more obvious than that is that they really want Josh Brolin to play Joel. I mean come on, even the names sound similar!
Raimi and Druckman came prepared. They brought along a special Comic Con poster with what looks like a slightly different Ellie on it.
The fifteen hour campaign, which feels like a well done film already, will have to be cut down. Not that I'm against sitting down and watching someone play through the game. The story is quite compelling, if a little melodramatic at points. Maybe I'm just an optimist and think that people might not be as cruel to one another when the world ends.
Video game movies could be the next big thing, just like superhero films are currently. Doug Liman is working on a Splinter Cell film with Tom Hardy in the lead, an Uncharted movie will happen and even Dead Island was picked up for a film option, though its progress remains in question. As the medium evolves to tell better and richer stories, Hollywood will keep noticing. I for one look forward to what they will do with The Last of Us.
How about you? Is the film unnecessary or could it be the start of something special?
