'80 Days' App: 'Sorcery!' Developer inkle Studios Returns Next Week With A Steampunk-themed Branching Narrative Mobile Game [TRAILER, SCREENS]

'Sorcery!' Developer Inkle Returns Next Week With '80 Days', Another Beautiful, Branching Narrative Game [TRAILER, SCREENS]

Sorcery! is one of the most incredible games you can get for your iPhone or Android device. No, it doesn't have premium content, endless running, or birds of any kind. It's an adaptation of a Gamebook, a 'Choose Your Own Adventure'-style book mashed together with a roleplaying game that's just incredibly immersive and amazing, and like nothing else out there. Now inkle Studios has returned with its own brand-new creation, 80 Days.

Shovel Knight: The NES Gets One Last Incredible 8-Bit Platform Game

80 Days is of course based on Jules Verne's classic Around the World in Eighty Days, an adventure novel that saw a man trying to circumnavigate the globe in 80 days on a bet. It doesn't seem like too hard now but this was published in 1873 when you couldn't just fly around the world, and this new adaptation will take place in the Victorian era as well. This isn't just a straight adaptation, however, this is a steampunk version of the world, so expect airships and all sorts of fun differences.

Since this is a gamebook it's only as strong as its story and the decisions you can make. Both will not be lacking. The script has around 500,000 words and more than 10,000 choices to make, which means that you will have a completely different experience than anyone else who plays it. There are 150 cities to visit, and innumerable side quests to attempt, as well as a live feed that shows all the other players' progress in real time, giving you ideas for your own journey and the ability to compete for best time.

Ascension Deckbuilding Game Gets 'Rise of Vigil' Expansion Update This Summer

There are many fine Gamebooks being either converted to digital versions or created exclusively for them, but with its first two Sorcery! titles inkle has shown they know not only how to adapt them, but the real way the genre should evolve, utilizing all that the technology affords them. I find myself gushing about the Sorcery! series whenever I talk about it and that may be because after playing so many junky, free-to-play games, getting completely immersed in a story and feeling like you're having a new experience- on a mobile game no less!- is just such a wonderful feeling.

Our wait for the third Sorcery! game (there are four parts total) to hit later this year is tempered by the fact that 80 Days will be hitting the App store shortly, on July 24. No word on an Android version just yet but one is undoubtedly in the works.
