Lock and load, 80s action fans, the man in the bandana and the .50 cal machine gun is coming back, and he's coming back hard. John Rambo, the ultimate Reagan asskicker, will be returning for a fifth installment in the storied franchise, and yes, Sylvester Stallone is coming along.
Godfire: Rise of Prometheus Review - Epic, Bloody, Underwhelming
Nu Image has bought the rights to the series and is working with Stallone on Rambo V. The German site Splendid Film broke the news and gave a little synopsis (with thanks to comingsoon):
"With Rambo V Sylvester Stallone returns in his iconic role. This time he goes up against a Mexican cartel. Stallone, who has also written the screenplay, describes the new Rambo as his version of No Country for Old Men. Like the last film, Rambo V is produced by Avi Lerner (The Expendables series)"
Sniper Elite 3 Day 1 Patch Update Is A Doozy
The last film in the series, 2008's Rambo was better than it had any right to be. It was lean, it was mean, it had an insanely huge body count. The final image of the film had Stallone's John Rambo returning, at last, to his home in the American west and was, for all intents and purposes, a perfect epilogue to an American icon. The film made back its $50 million budget and then some, creating clamor for another grim 'n' gritty Rambo escapade.
A rumor in 2009 had Rambo going up against some sort of mutant-alien hybrid which, while sounding absolutely amazing doesn't quite mesh with the Rambo franchise. Admittedly, these are movies where Rambo is the best and the bad guys can't hit a damn thing, so what do I exactly know? After all, Stallone does have an Academy Award for writing and I do not...yet.
The No Country For Old Men comparison has me intrigued, and honestly, the themes of that film, that of men of a different time being unable to adapt to the modern age, could work in the context of a Rambo film. Rambo toyed with the idea itself. While I don't expect any grand meditation on humanity, life or retirement, a 'one last mission' type film with an older Rambo has potential.
And at the very least, it will have a whole mess of violence, and I can always get behind that.
