Apple Releases Cheaper iMac: Popular Computer Model Drops To Lowest Price Ever At $1,099

Apple today released a cheaper version of its iMac computer, retailing at a $1,099 price point.

The configuration offered at that price is of course less powerful than the normal setup, with Apple seeming to compromise mainly on a slower 1.4GHz Intel Core i5 processor to justify the price reduction.

The new low-end setup represents a $200 price cut compared to the next-lowest model, which boasts a 2.7GHz Intel Core i5 processor. That offering is still available for $1,299, the processor clearly an upgrade over the new cheaper model.

For those who don't require a computer that can handle very strenuous tasks, the new model still represents a quality system that should be able to fill their needs. It comes with 8GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive, which is also a downgrade compared to the $1,299 model that boasts 1TB. Both boast Intel graphics chips, not high-end dedicated cards, but the new model again has a less powerful version.

This configuration was never meant for serious professionals that need a lot out of their rig, though, so the main audience for a cheaper model will not likely be bothered by these steps down in some areas. The competitive pricing is more aggressive against PCs that offer similar specs and touchscreen displays, and could combat Windows on that price level if consumers aren't put off by the downgraded model.
