Amazon Smartphone Release: Report Claims Device Exclusive To AT&T, Will Be Revealed Tomorrow

Report Claims Amazon Smartphone Will be Exclusive to AT&T, Will Be Revealed Tomorrow

According to The Wall Street Journal, the rumored Amazon phone will be exclusive to AT&T.

The report from WSJ cites sources familiar with the plans, who also say the device is set to be unveiled Wednesday at a media event.

Amazon already has a relationship with AT&T (the company provides wireless service for Kindle tablets and e-readers), giving lending more credence to this report. Given the battle for market share among major service providers, this could give AT&T a boost over its competitors, as Amazon's brand and products are desirable among consumers.

It would likely benefit Amazon more in the future to offer its device with every provider to increase the market for the phone, but an exclusive deal makes sense for entering the market, and does not have to be permanent. For now, it reduces launch costs and splits the marketing burden between the two companies.

Expected to be included in Amazon's phone are multiple interesting features, including glasses-free 3D. This isn't an entirely new feature for smartphones as The Verge points out, but Amazon seems to be using different technology like the phone's motion sensors to achieve the effect (perhaps for a new shopping interface).

Keep an eye out tomorrow for news of the device coming out of the media event, and be sure to check back for details.
