'Kingdom Hearts 3' Release Date: What Characters Are Narrating? Co-Director Offers Clues To Secret Identities [IMAGES, VIDEO]

Director Tai Yasue Hints at Characters Behind Kingdom Hearts 3's Plot

Earlier this week, viewers of a trailer for Kingdom Hearts 2.5 ReMIX were treated to the faintest of teases for Kingdom Hearts III. Short and sweet, the clip consisted of conversation over a few flashes of words about lost masters and keyblade wars, but who the voices belong to remains a mystery. Recently, Kingdom Hearts Co-Director Tai Yasue let slip some hints as to who this person could be.

Kingdom Hearts III Co-Director Reveals Teaser Is Actually Game's Introduction

Speaking to KH Insider about the footage at the end of the trailer, Yasue had this to say:

"Although the footage may change, Kingdom Hearts 3 will be about those words from the start of the game. It's a secret but as for whom the person speaking is, you may be able to pin [their identity] down immediately from the figures seen."

Kingdom Hearts III Fact Sheet Light on Context

Accompanying the trailer were brief flashes of characters -- pause it just right, and you can see 'em. But if your clicking skils aren't up to muster, you can see the images in the order that they appear below:

Considering the flashes, and that the narration comes across as more of a conversation, and just from the flashes of characters, I'd have to assume that the two speaking are Vanitas and Xemnas, but things are never quite as they seem in Kingdom Hearts. I'm admittedly thoroughly unfamiliar with the series' lore, so take that theory with a big grain of salt.

Whoever it is talking likely won't be revealed for some time. Kingdom Hearts III is currently in production, and we haven't even been given a release date yet.

You can snag a look at the teaser / intro below. Not that it's a chore to sit through, but if you'd rather get right to it, skip ahead to the 2:32 mark.

Story wise, the game's Director, Tetsuya Nomura, has previously said that Kingdom Hearts III's story will begin where Nintendo 3DS exclusive Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance concludes. Cinematics from 3D will be included in 2.5 ReMIX, so players can get up to speed.

"It's the final episode in the 'Dark Seeker' saga that ban with the original KH and it'll depict the final battle with Xehanort," said Nomura.

Considering that Kingdom Hearts 3 is set to be the series first new home console release since 2006's Playstation 2 exclusive Kingdom Hearts 3, special care has been given to make the game appealing for next-gen according to Nomura. We'll let you know when you can expect Kingdom Hearts 3 on Xbox One and PS4 as soon as Square Enix makes the announcement.
