Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon's Twitter tease came to a close this weekend, and with it, a new game in the bloody series was formally announced - Mortal Kombat X.
There are bone breaking moves aplenty in the game's announcement trailer, and (taking a cue from the studio's own Injustice: Gods Among Us) possibly even interactive environments, illustrated by Sub-Zero ripping off and freezing a tree branch before cracking it smack dab against Scorpion's cranium like a ninja José Offerman. This was later followed up by the frosty fighter giant swinging from another branch, catching Scorpion in the chin not once, but twice.
“Mortal Kombat has always been about over-the-top, visceral fighting and with Mortal Kombat X we wanted to utilize the power of new-gen consoles to give players our most intense game yet,” said Boon in a press release. “The team has worked hard to make sure Mortal Kombat X delivers everything fans expect along with new characters, new game modes and an all new graphics engine.”

Still, it was all in vain, as Scorpion enacted the same brutality he's known for, executing the blue garbed kombatant with lethal efficiency. Check it all out in the video below.
The game obviously looks damn good, but don't take that as a bad sign when it comes to the game's availability. Mortal Kombat X is due out for both current and last generation platforms: PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, in addition to Windows PC. The game will also appear at this year's E3.
Mainstays Scorpion and Sub-Zero are obviously a part of the roster, as are "new challengers that represent the forces of good and evil." While 2011's Mortal Kombat helped clear up a lot of the series "konfusion" by rebooting the brand, Mortal Kombat X might just complicate things a bit. It'll be the first game in the series that'll allow players to "choose from multiple variations of each character impacting both strategy and fighting style," and possibly even the story, but more on that as the information comes to light.
