Nintendo got itself into some hot water recently over simulator Tomodachi Life because it offers no options for same-sex marriages. While that may have been a thoughtless exclusion rather than actively choosing to leave the option out, the Japanese company's somewhat tone-deaf response only made matters worse.
Nintendo Made 'Playful World' Priority Over Gay Marriage
Nintendo eventually apologized after a period of internet outrage, promising to be more inclusive in future releases. This topic has served as the perfect platform for jokes alongside the genuine criticism, and none have taken aim in a more committed fashion than John Oliver.
The comedian used his new late-night HBO show Last Week Tonight to poke fun at the whole situation, from the initial outcry to Nintendo's promise to do better in the future. The video is posted below, and worth watching for a few laughs. It gets somewhat inappropriate, so maybe watching it at work isn't the greatest idea, but it is definitely ridiculous.
Nintendo Has A 'Clear Idea' Of Console After Wii U
The production team on Oliver's show went to great lengths to recreate the characters digitally, something I'm not sure protective Nintendo will be too happy to see (especially given what the end up doing in the skit). The result is funny nonetheless, and he gets in a few jokes about rights to pensions and death benefits.
Last Week Tonight has had some good clips come out of it so far, and you can catch it Sunday nights on HBO if you'd like to see more.
