The creator of the "Mortal Kombat" franchise, Ed Boon, talked about developer NetherRealm Studio's plans for future DLC for "Mortal Kombat 1" specifically.

Boon talked about the state of the game in a multi-post thread on X on Tuesday evening. The first thing that he announced was that "Mortal Kombat 1" has sold more than 5 million copies since it was launched in September 2023.

Additionally, the fighting game continues to be among the top 15 games on PlayStation 5 when it comes to weekly active users. Boon added that the release of the Conan the Barbarian DLC, which came out on Jan. 21, 2025, introduced the 11th DLC fighter in "Mortal Kombat 1."

The 12th DLC fighter, the T-1000 Terminator, is set to come to the game's roster sometime in the near future. Fans have been speculating for quite some time now about who could be added to the game as future fighters, according to Insider Gaming.

The rumors spread even more following the lackluster sales of the game's Kombat Pack 2 and the Khaos Reigns expansion. Boon did not mention another Kombat Pack or story expansion but noted that they have more content planned for players.

He posted that with Conan the Barbarian arriving in "Mortal Kombat 1," they are excited to keep moving forward with future DLCs for the game. A known franchise leaker was the one who gave fans their first news about the end of Mortal Kombat 1 DLC as plans were canceled by the developers.

What To Expect Next?

Boon's post suggests that everything is going relatively well for "Mortal Kombat 1" and NetherRealm Studio specifically. It seems like the fighting game will still have support for quite some time as well as new content, Game Reactor said.

On top of the "Mortal Kombat" franchise creator's post, there have been recent rumors that suggest "Mortal Kombat 1" is going back to its roots. These claim that a new secret ninja could be coming to the fighting game.

This comes as in 2022, Boon said that he wanted to make a pink ninja and named him Floyd, as a reference to Pink Floyd. The recent rumors come with the release of the Conan the Barbarian DLC.

Some players found Floyd's name, accompanied by an electric guitar lick, sometimes appearing on screen at the end of fights while using Conan as a character on the Living Forest stage. This particular stage is popular for being where secret characters, such as Jade and Smoke, would appear in "Mortal Kombat 2," according to Polygon.
