Rumors are spreading that developer Sledgehammer Games will take the lead on the Call of Duty franchise for the series' 2027 installment.
The report talking about the development noted that Microsoft was making a new committee within Activision. This will be responsible for guiding the future of the Call of Duty franchise. A recent report claims that Sledgehammer Games has been chosen to be the helm of the series.

The rumor comes from Call of Duty leaker TheGhostOfHope who historically reported accurate information on previous developments in the series. He said that the entry by Sledgehammer Games will closely follow Infinity Ward's 2026 title, which is rumored to be Modern Warfare 4.
The leaker also said that the studio's Call of Duty game could potentially be Advanced Warfare 2 or something completely new to the franchise. Many smaller development studios are working on concurrent projects for the Call of Duty franchise.

This is because Activision releases new Call of Duty titles every year, which necessitates extra work to maintain its pace. Sledgehammer Games has previously lent a hand to other Activision studios on several entries in the series, according to Game Spot.

Sledgehammer Games was originally founded by Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey. They were the ones who created Dead Space. Leading the Call of Duty franchise is good news for the studio. This is because it has not been at the helm for quite some time.
The rumors come as fans are looking forward to a potential Black Ops 2 sequel next year that is set in the early 2030s. It could continue the storyline with David Mason returning as the protagonist and will feature mechanics added in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, according to 80lv.
