Sega just casually confirmed that there is a new Virtua Fighter title that is currently under development within the company.

The news comes following an interview with Sega's global head of transmedia Justin Scarpone. He talked about some of the titles that the company is bringing back to the forefront. These include Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio.

New Virtua Fighter Game

The majority of the franchises that Scarpone mentioned during the interview were also showcased during The Game Awards. The revelation was part of Sega's plans for a new era for the company.

But the fact that Virtua Fighter was also mentioned in the recent interview is something that came as new information for fans. The last mainline entry for the series came in the form of Virtua Fighter 5, which was released in 2006.

The franchise has had many riffs and redos throughout the years, including Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown, which came out in 2015. Another one was Virtua Fighter Ultimate Showdown which was released in 2021, according to Engadget.

Other than Scarpone's casual information drop of the work on a new Virtua Fighter game, there is no other detail about the project. However, it is highly likely that fans will see the return of Akira Yuki and many other familiar characters.

Virtua Fighter is considered a relatively hardcore title in the fighting game genre. The franchise features slower-paced gameplay than what most fans are used to seeing. Games such as Tekken and Street Fighter usually have fast-paced action.

This system challenges players to master the game's mechanics. This is how you can be successful in your endeavors. Virtua Fighter 5 is also considered one of the best fighting games in history, IGN said.

Teasing the Return of the Franchise

The first title in the Virtua Fighter series was the 1993 arcade game of the same name that was later ported to Sega Saturn in 1994 and 32X in 1995. The series itself was considered to be revolutionary. It later became one of Sega's best-selling arcade games in history.

Many people also praised the Virtua Fighter series for being innovative. This was due to its amazing gameplay and presentation. The entire franchise spans five mainline titles but including spinoffs, the series has 24 different titles.

While the Virtua Fighter franchise was not included in Sega's initial reveal of games that were making a return, there was a tease during the awards ceremony. This was based on pre-show marketing from the company that used the same stylized font as the Virtua Fighter entries, according to Game Rant.
