Hell is Us is an upcoming action-adventure game set in the early 1990s and was made by developer Rogue Factor.

The title follows protagonist Remi going on a journey to find his parents in the fictional country of Hadea. In this game, players will not have access to maps or a quest tracker, giving them a new challenge.

Hell is Us Preview

The main way that you can navigate through the world of Hell is Us is by gathering directions or hints about the landscape from the characters that you encounter. This system fits well with the narrative that Remi is infiltrating Hadea with almost no information to help him.

It also makes players more fearful as they explore as they have no idea what lies ahead of them. They are unaware of any landscape changes or what creatures could be lurking in the shadows, according to Eurogamer.

On the other hand, the game features an "Investigation" hub which is the closest thing you will get to a quest journal. Some information is displayed here in mind-map style. If there is anything missing, the game tasks you with remembering it.

The hub is less about recording everything you experience and more about holding crucial puzzle pieces to chart your character's next adventure. You can quickly check it for anything you may have missed before continuing on your travels.

Hell is Us also features battles against faceless creatures that have seemingly taken over much of the world. The game seems to be taking inspiration from the Dark Souls and Death Stranding franchises. However, it aims to stand out from other games with its focus on exploration, IGN said.

A Unique Action-Adventure Game

Creative director Jonathan Jacques-Belletete talked about the creatures in Hell is Us during a discussion at Gamescom 2024. He explained the influence that the movie "Annihilation" played on the upcoming game.

The developer appears to have been inspired by the 2018 film's visuals and the trilogy of novels that it was based on. Players can feel this with the soundtracks in Hadea and it becomes much more evident when you encounter enemies.

The creatures in the game are humanoid-like creatures that have seemingly infinite voids that are burrowed into their faces and bodies. Regular weapons do nothing against these enemies. You will have to use a special type of weapon and drone to take them down.

You can use your sword to perform light and heavy attacks as well as parry incoming hits. The drone also offers a series of on-cooldown abilities that help you out while in combat, according to PCGamesN.
