Obsidian Entertainment director Carrie Patel talked about Avowed, the studio's upcoming Xbox RPG, and about the game's potential endings.

Patel also noted that the RPG's ending slides number in the double digits, which means that players can potentially end up with a lot of different combinations of them. The ending slides that were talked about most likely refer to the post-game still images.

Details About Avowed

These come with context that tells the player what had happened to both them and the characters that they met along their journey. This is a common ending technique that many RPGs use as oppose to  the prohibitively more expensive effort to animate several permutations of an ending.

Patel later added that players' ending in Avowed really is the sum total of all of their choices across the entire game. Avowed was originally scheduled to launch later this year but has been delayed to 2025, according to the Video Games Chronicle.

Avowed is now set to release on Feb. 18, 2024, and comes after it was first announced in 2020 during an Xbox Series X showcase. At the time, excited fans were introduced to the brand-new role-playing game.

Despite Patel's comments, it remains a mystery just how many "full" endings Avowed will have for players to see and how many make up the ending slides. When it launches next year, the game will be available on Xbox and PC.

So far, there is still no word regarding whether or not Avowed will be coming out on the PlayStation 5 as well. When players get their hands on the game, they will be able to choose to play in either first-person or third-person view, said WCCFTech.

An Upcoming Xbox RPG

The story of Avowed is where the world of Eora is experiencing some sort of magical plague and players will take control of an important envoy from a nearby empire to investigate the cause.

The demo that was available at Gamescom 2024 allowed those who were able to play it to take control of a Barbaria, a stealthy Scout, or a magic-infused Mage. At the time, the characters all had locked ability loadouts so there wasn't much chance to experiment.

The preview focused on a dungeon exploration mission where players had to track down a lost expedition. You have a companion for this quest, Kai, who is voiced by Brandon Keener who also voiced Garrus from the Mass Effect trilogy.

Even with the limited demo, Avowed was able to show off some of its deep lore, and many players expect it has a decade of backstory to get into, according to Eurogamer.
